Marvel Legends 1: The Avengers is the first series in the Marvel Legends saga. The series adapts the formation of the Avengers. The major heroes in the series are Captain America, Thor, Iron Man and the Hulk, with Ant-Man, Wasp, Hawkeye, Nick Fury, Black Widow and Phil Coulson as supporting characters

The series takes place in two different time-zones, shifting frequently between Captain America's missions in World War II and the first missions of the Avengers in the not-too-distant future. The plot takes elements from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the classic comic books, the Ultimates and the animated film Ultimate Avengers.

Plot summary[]

The plot primarily involves a scheme by HYDRA to take over the world, involving the element vibranium, a "cosmic cube", the god Loki, nuclear warfare, the Hulk's DNA and an alien race called the Chitauri. The Avengers are formed to combat this threat, but find their differences and disagreements to be a major distraction.

The series contains two sub-plots. One centres on Captain America and his struggle to remember his wartime adventures and battles with the Red Skull to work out HYDRA's plot and his disappearence into the Arctic circle. The other sub-plot centres on the fued between the gods Thor and Loki. While Thor tries to reconcile with his brother, Loki intends to use HYDRA as part of his own diabolical plan.
